Target Case Study Program

The Target Case Study program brings “hands-on, real-world” business experience to our Marketing Strategy students.  The case studies are true business situations in need of sound, strategic thinking in order to foster actionable recommendations to benefit Target’s business.  Students are required to develop a comprehensive marketing plan to simulate what would be created in the business environment to satisfy this type of endeavor.  Equally as valuable as the strategic thinking and written work, is the opportunity to present their work to a panel of Target executives.  The face to face contact is invaluable for students given their limited exposure to present.  The overall experiences, as well as the student’s presentations have far exceeded all expectations.  In fact, the program has been such a success with Sony Brook’s College of Business that Target Corporate has decided to expand the program to a national level using Stony Brook as a model for other colleges and universities.

Tha Target Case Study program is lead by prof. Camille Abbruscato.

I assign projects that mimic what I know to be true in the business world.  I remember what it was like to sit in those seats for hours a day, graduate and feel absolutely helpless in my first job.  The projects can seem frustrating at first, but rewarding in the end when my students see the fruits of their labor.  I tell them someday, they’ll be CEO’s, brand managers, financial analysts and accountants, so they need to be adequately prepared to enter the business world.   Right now, they’re our sons and daughters, our nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends, but more than anything, they’re our future.  I believe we need to make the investment now so that we can yield the greatest returns for the future.

The Target Case Study Program was probably one of the coolest achievements of my undergraduate career. We were presented with a real-world issue and given the task of applying our minds to provide a feasible solution: a fusion of brainstorming, hardcore research, classroom knowledge, and good ol' creativity ensued. It encouraged us to work together as a team and put ourselves in a simulated business environment.

This was not just any assignment; it spanned the entire semester and was more of a journey than anything. The process from start to finish was a great learning experience that culminated in a presentation to a panel of Target executives which was valuable as both an experience and an achievement to be proud of. Mastery of face to face client interaction is key out here in the real world.

With that said, I am currently working in the field where market research and advertising collide, particularly in the digital world. I juggle multiple campaigns with all well known, renowned brands and love every minute of it. I learn something new every day, but I am only here because of my accomplishments in the past. The Target Case Studies were not only great to learn from, but will provide you some leverage when it comes time to interview. If you've got a chance to participate in the program, I say jump in, the water's fine!
